George Elliott RIP

The late George Elliott -

George Elliott, who died on Monday last, had a long association

with our club. He played with the senior and junior sides, acted

as manager and selector, but probably his greatest contribution

was as a committee man and chairman in the 1970s and ‘80s.

He was at the helm when, after years as tenants, we purchased

six acres on The Ramparts from the Christian Brothers. Pairc na

nGael and its surrounds today stands as testament to this

forward-thinking decision.

George, who lived on Vincent Avenue in his youth, played with

Hill Street in the early days of Cumann Peile na nOg, before

graduating to Gaels underage sides. He then assisted the club’s

adult teams, and when his playing days were over he took

charge of the junior, guiding the Pat McCann-captained side to

a Macardle Cup win.

His work took him to other parts of the country in recent years,

but he remained in contact with the club, attending many

matches.

Sympathy is extended to George’s wife, Mary (nee Duffy), son,

Stephen, and members of the extended Elliott family. His burial

takes place on Saturday.

The club will provide a guard of honour at the removal of

remains from Quinn’s Funeral Home, Castletown Road, to St

Nicholas’ Church for 11 o’clock Mass. Burial takes place in St

Patrick’s Cemetery.
